Abstract(s) :

(Anglais) Electroless nickel-boron coatings can provide a good alternative to hard chrome plating with their high hardness (up to 800 hv100) and their excellent shape compliance and adhesion. The usual plating rate of borohydride-reduced coatings is 15 µm/h but the operating temperature is very high 95°C. However, the most interesting thing about those coatings is the possibility of enhancing their mechanical properties by various methods: heat treatment can bring an important increase of hardness, wear and abrasion resistance with only a slight decrease in corrosion resistance. Vacuum nitriding can be used to reach hardness up to 1600 hk100 without loss of adhesion. Duplex and multilayer coatings can also be used, in this case not to increase hardness but to lower wear rate. The use of multilayers containing both nickel-phosphorus and nickel-boron leads to impressive reduction of wear. Finally, it is possible to increase the plating rate while slightly decreasing the plating temperature by the use of ultrasound assistance, without modifying the coating properties.
