Abstract(s) :

(Anglais) Abstract Purpose. This study investigates the abilities of aphasic patients with phonetic disorders – presumably including difficulties in temporal coordination between laryngeal and supralaryngeal gestures –, to acquire a non-usual phonetic variant in their mother tongue that requires new articulatory schemes. Material and methods. Four French-speaking aphasic patients participated in the present study, as well as 36 control participants. They were presented with an experimental paradigm consisting in multiple repetitions of C[t]V[a] syllables of 60 ms-VOT (the target of the training), 3 times: before any training, after a perceptual training (AX discrimination involving CV syllables of 20 ms- to 100 ms-VOT), and after a production training (repetition of syllables of 20 ms- to 100 ms-VOT). Results and discussion. The four aphasic patients show an increase of VOT values towards the 60 ms-VOT target, or at least a diminution of atypical productions (e.g. in terms of place of articulation of the voiceless stop). These results suggest that, even in the case of coordination difficulties between the articulators, aphasic patients are able to act on articulatory timing in order to acquire a new phonetic variant. The implication of these results for the clinical rehabilitation of these patients is discussed.
