Abstract(s) :

(Anglais) Firm bankruptcy, when it arises, may have many consequences for the shareholders of the firm as well as for society in general. While evidence over bankruptcy prediction has mushroomed in the literature, there is no study that is placed upstream of the bankruptcy process and that attempts to identify the factors linked to both the characteristics of the workforce and the firm that enable a firm to improve its performance on the market, thus maximizing its chances of survival. Relying on European panel data covering the period 2004-2013 and controlling for a wide range of biases, our results show that it would be appropriate, when the firm behaves in a high risk of bankruptcy, to favour the hiring of highly educated and female workers, these ones being able to increase the performance of a firm behaving in a high risk of bankruptcy.
