(Anglais) Recently, the design and synthesis of new polymer matrix/inorganic filler nanocomposite materials have been extensively studied in order to combine the properties of mineral (nano)fillers and polymer matrices. In the process of preparation of these nanocomposites, it is very important to control the dispersion homogeneity of the nanoparticles in the matrix because this distribution greatly influences many functionalities of nanocomposite materials. Among the different types of nanoparticles, nanosized zinc oxide has achieved an increasing interest and is widely used in a variety of applications including photocatalysis and UV absorber materials. It is an environmentally friendly, colorless and multifunctional material. The sol-gel process constitutes one of the easiest ways to develop modified materials (materials with the required properties depending on their composition). The sol-gel materials are distinguished by durability and stability, and many of them are optically transparent. It also provides better corrosion resistance to metal substrates. Currently, silica-based sol–gel materials are the most widespread. The aim of the present study is to investigate the elaboration of a new type of ZnO/sol-gel nanocomposite coatings, which can provide a number of properties such as antibacterial, self-cleaning, UV-absorbent, mechanical and barriers depending on targeted applications. The sol-gel coating modified with nanosized zinc oxide is an inorganic-organic hybrid based on tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). In order to ensure good dispersion in the sol-gel matrix, ZnO nanoparticles were surface-modified with a silane coupling agent. The functionalization was confirmed by FTIR and TGA analyses. FEG-SEM characterization of the nanocomposite film reveals a homogeneous distribution of the ZnO nanoparticles throughout the film. Some properties such as UV absorption and barrier will be highlighted and a study according to the concentration of ZnO will be also presented.
