Abstract(s) :

(Anglais) After the “in use” failure of metallic components, it is really important to understand the origins of the failure to avoid any further occurrences. In order to identify the root causes of these failures, manufacturers usually send failed parts to laboratories. The reports provided by those labs are sometimes satisfactory and sometimes not. During this presentation, we investigate two failure cases. In each occurrence the problem was previously analysed by another lab and their reported conclusions are presented. Our analysis of the problem is then presented. We show here that the conclusions of the failure analysis cases can be very different between various laboratories due to different interpretation of same results. How can it be so ? The cases presented in this study are (1) a helicopter main rotor cyclic pitch control stick and (2) a stainless steel chain link used in radiographic applications.
