Abstract(s) :

(Anglais) After the failure of a metallic compound in use, it is important to understand the causes of failure to avoid it happening again. To do this, people who have known failure ask laboratories and experts to examine the failed parts, aiming to obtain explanations of failure based on scientific examination and argumentation. Sometimes the reports of those studies are satisfactory and sometimes not. As we’ll show in this presentation, it is sometimes useful to ask for a second opinion. In those two cases, the causes of failure obtained by the two labs were very different, due to different interpretation of the same results. Those cases are (1) a helicopter main rotor cyclic pitch control stick and (2) a stainless-steel chain link used in X-ray radiography applications.
