Abstract(s) :

(Anglais) In recent research papers, several authors affirm that nickel and its alloys passivate in aqueous media. However, careful reading of those papers show that, on one hand, said passivation was only observed in some specific media and, on the other hand, that several transcription errors were made between the actual investigation paper and the citing papers. In consequence, there is no definite knowledge about the conditions of nickel alloys passivation any more. To remedy this, this paper focusses on electrochemical investigation of pure nickel and binary nickel alloys (Ni-B, Ni-P, Ni-Cr) in several media. The chosen media are the most popular electrolytes for electrochemical corrosion studies: 0,1 M Na2SO4 (at various pH), 0,1 M NaCl (at various pH), 0,1 M Na2SO4 + 0,1 M NaCl and 0,1 M NaOH. Corrosion behaviour of the samples was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests. The nature of corrosion products was studied by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM, coupled with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the surface to detect the presence of a passive layer. As a mean of comparison and validation, similar tests were carried out on a well-known passivating aluminium alloy: AA 2024.
