Abstract(s) :

(Anglais) Centrifugal casting allows fabrication of bi-metallic rolls for rolling mills, with a hard outer layer (cast first) and a tenacious core cast in the left over central space). The process was studied by two methods of physical modelling. Liquid modelling was used to observe the filling kinetics of the mould and the shape of the metal-air interface, with the aim of providing information to a casting modelling software to calculate temperature evolution in the roll and mould. The importance of diffusion processes between the shell and the core metal, which cannot be deduced from a liquid model, was observed by the use of a low melting point material, in this case paraffin wax (which has a low melting point and can be coloured). The shell and core were modelled by distinctly coloured paraffin wax and the diffusion was evaluated by observation of the colour gradient.
