Email : isabelle.simoesloureiro@umons.ac.be Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by an early breakdown of memory. Among the memory disorders in AD, semantic memory impairment is common and appeared through modifications in the lexico-semantic network. The study of the deterioration of two kinds of links (taxonomic and thematic) is particularly interesting because their pattern of evolution could be distinct (Jones & Estes, 2012). To contribute to the understanding of semantic memory disorganization in AD, we investigate the lexico-semantic network in 38 healthy senior and 78 AD patients (divided into three groups depending on their global cognitive deterioration: 27 mild, 26 moderate and 25 advanced AD). The experimental protocol contains two tasks using the same target items. The first one is a verbal association test. Participants have to respond the three first words they think of in response to a target word. Each response was coded according to different categories including taxonomic and thematic category. The second task is a matching-to-sample test (participants have to sort a taxonomic, thematic and unrelated picture in accordance with the strength of the connection with a target picture). Preliminary data show a distinct taxonomic and thematic evolution pattern. We observed an early decrease in taxonomic associations in both tasks, followed by a later deterioration of thematic links. Our results are consistent with previous research showing an early semantic network disorganization. It also demonstrates a distinct pattern of semantic deterioration : thematic links are better preserved in the first stage of the disease compared to taxonomic links.
