Abstract(s) :

(Anglais) The aim of the present study was to analyse and compare the development of socio-­pragmatic skills in young bilingual and monolingual children matched for age and socio-­economic status. Our first objective was to test the hypothesis that bilingual children develop the ability to take someone else’s perspective earlier and therefore, process second labels for a referent, and more precisely synonyms, more quickly than monolingual children. The second objective was to evaluate and compare the nature of referential pacts in bilingual and monolingual children. We wanted to determine whether children process second labels slower when these are produced by a conversational partner who already named the referents, as it had been demonstrated by Matthews and her colleagues (2010). 35 children performed a referential communication task adapted from Matthews et al’s experimental paradigm. Our results didn’t show a bilingual advantage in the processing of synonyms and question the existence of a specific effect of the speaker’s identity on the processing of referring expressions.
