Abstract(s) :

(Anglais) The causes of in-use failure of ferrous components can be identified by several simple analytical methods, such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-rays fluorescence, hardness testing. During this presentation, we propose to analyse four cases of failure and to present the results of our examinations. The cases studied are (1) a stainless steel tube used in a hot water circulation system, (2) a galvanized steel tube used in a water distribution system, (2) a welded component used in a conveyor chain for paper recycling and (4) a stainless steel chain link used in radiographic applications. The causes of failure are (1) stress corrosion cracking, (2) pitting corrosion, (3) presence of hard constituents in the heat affected zone and (4) fatigue.
